The Zadar archipelago at midday
Zadar · 200 tours reviewed

The Adriatic starts here.

Kornati by boat, Plitvice and Krka by morning coach, the blue lagoons of Dugi Otok, and the sunset the town is famous for. What each day is really like, what it costs, and where to book it.

The shortlist

Seven you can book with your eyes shut.

First visit or fifth, these are the ones that carry a Zadar trip: the boat out to the Kornati stone islands, the emerald boardwalks of Plitvice, an afternoon anchored in a lagoon nobody can reach on foot.

The big day inland

Sixteen lakes, one long boardwalk.

Two hours up from the coast, the water turns a colour photos never quite hold: terraced lakes falling into each other over travertine steps, walkways skimming the surface, a ferry across the big lake in the middle. Leave early, wear real shoes, and give it the whole day it asks for.

The last hour of light

The town that plays the sunset.

Hitchcock called this the finest sunset in the world, and the waterfront was built to meet it: the Sea Organ breathing music through the swell, the Greeting to the Sun lighting up as the sky goes gold. See it from the quay, or from the deck of a boat easing back into the channel with a glass in hand.

In the water, not just on it

Paddle out and look down.

The clearest water on the coast rewards the people who get into it: a sea kayak tracing the old-town walls at dawn, a snorkel stop over a bright sand bottom, a paddleboard on a glassy morning bay. Quieter than the big boats, and closer to everything.

Inland & unhurried

The hinterland tastes like this.

Behind the beaches, the Ravni Kotari hills run on olive oil, sheep’s cheese and Zadar’s own maraschino. Taste your way through a konoba lunch, freewheel an island lane on two wheels, or take the whole panorama in from an open tuk-tuk.

The other waterfalls

Krka, where the falls come to you.

Smaller than Plitvice and closer to the coast, Krka trades boardwalk-gazing for something you can feel: a national park you reach by boat up a green river gorge, monasteries on midstream islands, and the wide curtain of Skradinski Buk thundering at the end of the trail. Pair it with a wine tasting on the way home.

Where the days happen

The coast, one stretch at a time.

Zadar is a base, not a bubble. The Kornati for open water. Dugi Otok for the beaches. Plitvice and Krka for the falls. Šibenik down the riviera, and the walled old town for the evenings in between.

Out of town

Out at dawn, back by dark.

Zadar sits within a morning of two national parks, a stone archipelago and a second walled city. Most run door to door with the coach or the boat home built into the ticket.
